How to Make French Press Coffee (Without the Bitterness)
French press is the easy win. No paper filters, no fuss, just a rich, velvety cup.
The quick specs
- Ratio: about 1:15. That's roughly 30 g of coffee to 450 g of water. As a simple rule of thumb, that's a bit over 2 tablespoons per 6 oz cup, so adjust to taste.
- Grind: coarse, like sea salt.
- Water: just off the boil, about 200°F.
- Time: 4 minutes.
Step by step
- Heat the water. Boil it, then let it rest for 30 seconds.
- Add the coffee. Coarse grounds go in the press.
- Pour and stir. Add all the water, give one gentle stir, and set the lid on without pressing.
- Wait 4 minutes. Use the time to find your favorite mug.
- Press slowly and pour right away. Grounds left sitting in the press keep brewing and turn bitter.
A tip for flavored coffee
A French press keeps the coffee's natural oils in your cup, so flavored coffee tastes round and cozy. Try Smores with a splash of warm milk. It's a campfire in a mug.
Good beans for your press
- Smores: marshmallow, chocolate and graham cracker vibes.
- French Vanilla: smooth and mellow.
- Mexican Chocolate: rich and a little bold.
