Better Coffee From Your Drip Machine: 5 Easy Tweaks

Better Coffee From Your Drip Machine: 5 Easy Tweaks

Your drip machine isn't the problem. A few small tweaks, no new gear, and your morning cup gets a glow-up.

The quick specs

  • Ratio: about 1:16, roughly 60 g of coffee to 950 g of water for a full 8-cup pot. As a rule of thumb, that's about 2 tablespoons per 6 oz.
  • Grind: medium (our Standard grind).
  • Water: fresh and cold. Your machine heats it.
  • Time: 5-7 minutes, depending on the machine.

5 easy tweaks

  1. Start clean. Rinse the carafe and basket so old coffee doesn't crash the party.
  2. Measure, don't eyeball. A scale or a scoop keeps every pot the same.
  3. Level the grounds. A gentle tap and they brew evenly.
  4. Brew close to a full pot. Tiny batches can taste thin.
  5. Skip the hot plate. Move coffee to a thermal carafe or your mug so it stays smooth.

A tip for flavored coffee

If a flavored brew tastes a little light, add a scoop more coffee rather than less water. Then add a splash of milk. Hazelnut loves this trick.
